Najo Design Competition 2016
Are you a budding Australian jewellery designer? Have you dreamed of seeing your design come to life? Our $4000 Design Competition closes soon – don’t miss your chance to win!
This year marks our 30th anniversary as a proudly Australian-owned business specialising in inspired sterling silver design. To celebrate this, and honour NAJO’s rich heritage of storytelling through jewellery, we have launched an exciting design competition for up-and-comers in the Australian jewellery industry. There’s still a little time to enter, so if this sounds like you or somebody you know, be sure to read on. Be quick! Entries close 31 May 2016.
The NAJO Design Competition will award a single winner in each of two entry categories: Design Merit and Commercial Appeal. Emerging designers are required to submit drawings of their designs only (we are not looking for a finished piece). Each winner will receive a $2000 cash prize and some extra perks unique to their category.
“Great design is the centre of the NAJO brand,” says founder Jo Tory. “Giving people an elegant and beautifully crafted vehicle for self-expression is at the heart of what we do. Now we’re inviting the wider jewellery-making community to take part in the next chapter of our NAJO story.”
“We’re excited to foster emerging design talent in our own country, and to support the Australian jewellery industry about which we’re so passionate,” says Jo.
Two Entry Categories
All hand-drawn entries must be designed for sterling silver jewellery (earring, ring, bracelet or necklace) in either of these 2 categories:
1. Design Merit
Designs entered into the Design Merit category will be judged for their originality, creativity and harmony in design.
The winner in this category will receive a $2000 cash prize and also be profiled on NAJO’s own website and Facebook page.
2. Commercial Appeal
In this category, the primary criteria is commercial appeal. How saleable is the finished product? Does the design have broad appeal? Also, is the design harmonious with the NAJO design aesthetic?
The winner in this category will receive a $2000 cash prize, plus their winning design will be produced and included in the NAJO Spring/Summer 2017 Collection. The finished product will be also named after its designer.
Who Can Enter? Emerging and Small-Scale Jewellery Designers
The NAJO Design Competition is open to apprentices, design students, jewellery design students and small-scale jewellery designers* who are welcome to enter both categories as many times as they like. Every entry must be unique and original. (*Small-scale jewellery designers are defined as those engaged in a commercial operation with a turnover of less than $100,000 per annum.)
The Judging Panel
Competition judges have been carefully selected to reflect expertise and excellence across the Australian jewellery industry, including the areas of manufacturing, design, marketing, retailing and wholesaling.
The judges will provide broad spectrum feedback and advice to the 5 selected finalists in each category.
