If we could predict the future, well… we probably wouldn’t be here talking about it.
Nobody can be certain what the Next Big Thing will be for fashion and design, but as all trend forecasters know, it pays to pay attention to the clues and ride the wave of the zeitgeist.
As a design house, NAJO is always tracking the trends and here are a few of our favourite clues to what 2019 will look like, style-wise.
Pantone®’s colour of the year always gets a lot of attention in the media and the catalyst for new homeware trends and style edits.
This year’s colour, Living Coral, is “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energises and enlivens with a softer edge” says Pantone®.
Beyond the literal interpretation of the colour, what are the clues we can take from this as designers?
Warmth. A humanising energy. Liveliness. Nature & nurture. Playfulness.
Colour on the run
Speaking of playfulness in colour terms, the Resort 2019 runway shows proved there’s likely to be plenty of fun times ahead. WWD reported a few key trends including saturated colours, mixed florals, shimmery metallics and colourful graphic stripes.
The clue here? Go bold or go home.
Also emerging from the Resort 2019 shows were the forthcoming season’s dominant beauty trends. According to Vogue, the head scarf – à la Jackie Onassis – will be prominent, which no doubt means the requisite oversized shades and statement earrings alongside.
Channel the little girl inside with upscale hair ribbons, clips and headbands set to be huge for grown-ups, albeit sophisticated/refined versions.
Plus, the recent passing of Chanel’s iconic designer Karl Lagerfeld has inspired a slew of tribute ponytails – which are ideally matched to a luxe velvet or silk ribbon.
When it comes to beauty, expect to see dramatic interpretations of the cat eye such as was seen at Erdem AW19 and in stylised outline form at Asai. At Halpern, this outline was filled with a burst of colour and finished in metallic leaf, a head-turner to suit the new collection’s glittering disco feel.
Key takeaway from this trend? Clear, fresh skin and minimal coverage elsewhere – this season, the eyes have it.
