The Artist Behind Our Latest Inspiration

Posted by Najo AU Admin on

Sol LeWitt Often, design inspiration is drawn straight from mother nature herself: beautiful, original and unbeatable. But sometimes, it comes from another plane. NAJO’s newest seasonal collection, La Tierra, draws its inspiration from the earth, but its most geometric designs are also heavily influenced by the work of pioneering artist Sol LeWitt (1928-2007). Who was Sol LeWitt? This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the death of the Connecticut-born painter and sculptor, who is widely regarded as one of the founders of Conceptual Art and the American Minimal Art movement. At the heart of these artistic movements were simplified, geometric...

Mythology Of The Scarab

Posted by Najo AU Admin on

The inspiration for our Najo Scarab Collection came, unsurprisingly, from the jewels of the Ancient Egyptians. Jewellery production in Ancient Egypt was prolific. Both gods and humans wore symbolic amulets for various reasons, but mainly to bring luck and protect the wearer from harm – from sickness, natural disasters or accidents. These amulets and talismans were considered to wield significant power for all.     The scarab was the most common amulet as it had perhaps the greatest symbolism of all – the protection of life. The scarab ensured that the sun rose and set every day, and so protected...

Black Is Back

The exquisite gemstone, Black Onyx, is a variant of agate - characterized by bands of transparency or colour variation, creating intricate and unique patterns. Bali Is A Jewel And An Enigma...

Posted by Najo AU Admin on

At first it seems to be a patchwork of contrast that leaves you wondering, yet its lasting impression is that of an integrated being. For its size - you could probably drive right around the island in a very long day - it is probably the most diverse and varied little island on the planet. The impression is that it is a contrast of the devotional and the material, and yet there are a million things in between. Despite its busyness (and that's an understatement!) there is a serenity in Bali, and it can be found at every corner. Just...

Witty Art

Posted by Najo AU Admin on

We are always looking for new concepts to illustrate and narrate our new jewellery collections. So when our stylist Hayley Callander suggested that we use the work of James Gordon, paper artist extraordinaire, for the photo shoot of our latest Esperanza Collection, I jumped at the chance. James, who has loved scissors and paper for as long as he can remember, is a genius at turning flat surfaces into 3 dimensional objects. He has loved working with "the ancient material that has been around since almost forever" since snipping paper as a child to make a circus that his Mum...

A Lazy Saturday Wandering Through Portobello Markets...

Posted by Najo AU Admin on

If anyone wants to experience a happening city, London is the place to go. Perhaps it is more alive since the Olympics, or maybe it has always been like that, but my recent visit was a delight. So much to see and do, but I honed in on looking at jewellery trends, architecture and retail. One lazy Saturday afternoon I spent wandering the Portobello Road market. What a treat! This historic market runs a good two miles through Notting Hill and is jam packed with vendors and visitors alike. For years this market has been world renowned for ‘its antiques,...
