Fashion first: what to wear this season & beyond

We might be a jewellery brand but it’s no secret that we keep a close eye on the runway here at NAJO HQ.

Our favourite European designers brought a tailored romance to Spring/Summer 19, and we’re already seeing the effect trickle through into everything from fast fashion to, yes, jewellery and accessories.

Impeccable cuts, crisp silhouettes and sharp shapes in flawless shades of white and shimmering metallics were overriding themes at the SS19 shows.

At Balmain, sculpture was a key inspiration, with garments at once dramatic and minimalist in pure white offset by gleaming silver. Futuristic, fluid and a clever play in contrasts, especially when paired with distressed denim and laddered knitwear.

Our key takeaway from the Balmain show? White, denim and silver is a trio with plenty of traction.

For SS19 at Chanel Ready-to-Wear, Lagerfeld took the iconic tweed into sunny new realms thanks to vibrant gelati hues and an oversized profile. Ladylike with a retro edge, this is everything we love about Chanel with a heady dose of fun-in-the-sun.

Key takeaway from Chanel this season? Karl loves a chunky bangle stack (both wrists, if you please) and so do we.

Sharp shoulders pervaded many of the designers this season, but none were more cutting than the ones seen at Balenciaga, in everything from pinstripe to leather and velour. Patterns were graphic and busy, with prints of overlaid text and sparkly Eiffel Towers creating magic out of kitsch.

Key takeaways? If you’re going to go for print and pattern this season, don’t hold back – make it top to toe.

Tailored perfection was the order of the day at Giambattista Valli Ready-to-Wear, with plenty of embellishment to add glamour and interest.

Fringing, flounces, animal print and lace brought the femininity with a nod to the 1970s, for an elegant and luxurious collection that was eminently wearable.

Key takeaway? Exquisite quality always wins out. It might not be a new idea, but it’s an eternal truth, both in the world of fashion and beyond.
