Freshwater pearls are created by placing a nucleus inside a mollusc. Then nature takes over, building a form around the nucleus which eventually becomes the pearl. Mabe pearls are created in a similar way, except that the nacre forms over the nucleus against the inside of the mollusc shell, creating the mabe’s distinctive domed shape.
